Great value for the price point
The booking details and paperwork said they took credit cards - they don't. We arrived with insufficient cash and they had to drive us to the 7/11 to withdraw cash to pay for the tariff. The owner was pleasant about this but we were slightly concerned, as he only had a two seater car, so my underage daughter was left alone in the accommodation, while I went off with him to sort out the money. She was concerned being left alone.
The advertisement also said that they offer free bikes. They don't anymore. When I asked why, I was told that previous guests had left the island with the key to the bike locks, causing inconvenience. Sounds like a reasonable reason but they need to update the online advertisement.
The owner doesn't speak English but uses printed signs to provide instructions about the key / check out time etc.

Unprepossessing but very well equipped and comfortable.
This was perfectly good place for our too-short stay on this beautiful 'art' island. Just round the corner from the rather-nice-looking Wright Style Hotel (see separate review of their dining space, Regalo) and opposite a great-looking, super-busy eatery where the queue was out the door but for for which we couldn't find an English name. Our room was the middle one of three, very well equipped and with a separate kitchen area and bathroom... and perfectly comfortable beds. Unexceptable but perfect for our needs.

Comfy but cold
Unless you are willing to pay high prices to stay at Benesse Hotel, the rest of the accommodation on Naoshima is either apartments or homestays.
Episode 1 is located in the sleepy little town of Tsumura - a small town but it does have two excellent local style restaurants and a small shop. You get free bike rental at Episode 1 and ten minutes north is Honmura, home to the Art House Project and the nicest town on the island with most dining options. Ten minutes south is the famous yellow pumpkin and the Benesse Art Gallery area. So Episode 1 is in a good location, perched within easy cycling distance of a lot of the main touristy spots. There is also a bus-stop nearby for the regular loop-bus around the island.
Our apartment had a bedroom with two very soft, comfy single beds and then through sliding doors was a kitchen area, bathroom and toilet. In March the temperatures at night were cold, so we had the air-con on in the bedroom to warm the room up... but the problem was outside the bedroom (i.e the kitchen and bathroom), it was cold. The shower had lots of hot water but the shower head was awkwardly located so I had to duck down to wash my hair!
The apartment was very spacious with lots of storage and good amenities. There is also a nice outdoor patio area with tables and chairs, so I think this would be a very pleasant place to stay in the warmer months. The family who run Episode 1 live in the large house opposite.
We found it difficult to find accommodation on Naoshima - Agoda didn't have any and booking.com only had a few. It's a small island so book ahead. That said, Episode 1 provided good value for money and we enjoyed our stay on Naoshima.

Perfect In-between Place, Comfy & Next Door To GREAT Meals
Comfy beds - Right in-between the Art Houses and all the Benesse crazine$$, in a peaceful setting, this simple, convenient, comfortable and authentic room (with free bicycles!), right next to 2 great restaurants, makes this booking an excellent choice. Do it. Book it!

Nice place to stay, good service
We had a really nice stay at episode 1. The beds are comfortable and the place is very clean. It has a kitchen, good bathroom and clean towels. We slept amazing there after a long travel day.
Also the host was really giving us a good service. We were stuck in Osaka because of a tyfoon. We arrived one day later and he did not charge us that missing night. Also he picked us up at the ferry, which was really nice. He responded very fast to emails, so the communication was good. He does not speak good English but this was not a problem.
There is a free bike service. Not the best bikes but sufficient to see the island.
Would definitely recommend this place if you don't want to spend a lot of money and have a comfortable stay. Location is good too.
